History

The taco's origins are shrouded in mystery, with hints of its existence dating back to 1550 BC when indigenous Mexicans in the Chiapas region crafted corn dough. The taco as we know it today is said to have emerged in the 18th century Mexican silver mines, where miners ingeniously wrapped spicy fillings in tortillas resembling sticks of dynamite. Soon after, bustling taquerias sprung up across Mexico City, often operated by women migrating from the country to the city for work. These culinary pioneers infused their tacos with the flavours from their regional hometowns, birthing the diverse array of variations we enjoy today.
